Book cover of Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett, featuring a glowing forest scene with three cloaked witches standing in silhouette at the center, surrounded by shadowy figures and green foliage, with the title and author’s name in large stylized lettering.

Wyrd Sisters is the sixth novel in the Discworld series and the second novel about the witches (after Equal Rites). Granny Weatherwax makes a return appearance, alongside newcomers Magrat (surname: Garlick, though it’s rarely used) and later fan-favorite Nanny Ogg.

The book has a rather Shakespearean plot, starting with a king being murdered by his duke to claim the throne. The duke fails to kill the king’s heir though, who is rescued by the witches and placed with a troupe of traveling actors. Fast-forward 15 years, and the witches restore the rightful king to the throne. All of this unfolds with the usual plot twists, jokes, and mockery of established practices and tropes.

I listened to Indira Varma’s narration, and by now I’ve stopped missing Stephen Briggs’ voice. But I found the plot of this book a bit less interesting than the standard set by Pratchett’s later books. There isn’t a bad Discworld novel out there, but this wasn’t my favorite.
