Book cover for “Year of Panic and Piracy” by Jacqueline Firkins, featuring large pink lettering over a bright blue sea, with a red sun setting behind a small sailboat on the horizon.

I’ve recently wondered multiple times: “How did this book make it onto my reading list?” and this was one such case. When I looked it up, it turned out this was included for free in my Amazon Prime subscription - so that, combined with my lack of attention to its genre, explains why I ended up reading this romance novel.

Philippa is an introverted history professor who leaves her frustrating and unfulfilling job, relationship, and living situation behind. She moves into the house that her deceased grandmother left her, and where the latter wrote her successful but unfinished romance book series about a pirate. An old collaborator of her grandma already lives in the house, but turns out to be not old at all - and was the cover model for the romance books. The rest of the story tells itself, doesn’t it?

While I’ve read some romance-neighboring genres recently (mostly involving dragons), I don’t usually knowingly pick up a romance book. Philippa’s story is written well enough, and while the plot is quite predictable, the family dynamics are fun and the joking about the pirate cover model got an occasional chuckle out of me. If romance is your favorite genre, you will likely enjoy Philippa Flynn’s Year of Panic and Piracy too. As for me, I’ll stick to the annual holiday movie binge as the main source of these types of stories.
