Crucible is the 15th book overall in the Awaken Online series about a virtual reality game that is taking the world by storm. The story directly follows the previous two books (Armageddon and Timeless), which brought together the separate character arcs from books 1-6 and the side stories.
If the titles in this series hadn’t been abstract, this book could’ve been called “Jason gets a dungeon (and runs with it)“. The book largely follows Jason, who becomes a dungeon owner when he unlocks his artifact. He builds this dungeon into a leveling powerhouse for players, with the help of the Cadys, the other avatars, and (increasingly) his former nemesis Alex. The story outside of the game also moves forward, with some fascinating plot developments and a great cliffhanger.
I loved this book and think Travis did a wonderful job balancing the needs of the main story while keeping things fresh with new mechanics. All main characters get some time in the limelight, but the majority of the book centers on Jason and Alex. It’s really fun to see Jason become a dungeon master, and Alex’s redemption arc feels complete by now. Some of the twists in their story had me chuckling in glee, while I also shed the occasional tear for the hardships the characters face. I can’t wait to read the next book!
